Italian cement demand started 2025 with an eight per cent YoY contraction in January, according to the data from Italian concrete association, Federbeton. This followed a nine per cent YoY expansion in December 2024. Italian construction production grew four per cent YoY in January 2025, according to Federbeton.
Cement import and export data, which lag production data by one month, show cement imports rose 69 per cent YoY to 214,879t in December, with a total CIF value of EUR17.988m or EUR84/t as value per tonne.?Cement exports also expanded robustly, increasing 38 per cent YoY to 146,124t, with a total FOB value of EUR13.518m or EUR93/t.?
External trade in 2024
Cement import and export data for 2024 show imports rose 49 per cent YoY, while exports increased six per cent YoY.
Turkey is the main importer of cement to Italy, followed by Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Tunisia, Spain and France.
France is the main export destination for Italian cement, followed by Malta, Switzerland, Spain, Slovenia and the USA. Italy is the third most important cement exporter in western Europe, after Germany and Spain.
