Brennand Cimentos, which owns National Cement, has presented to Brazil's Municipal Council for the Environment (COMDEMA) a project to build a 2.2Mta cement plant in Itaiacoca district, Conceição region of Brazil. The new plant is to be called Compania Paraná Cimentos (CPR).
The project, with estimated investment of BRL700m (US$221m), has currently applied for a preliminary permit at the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP).
According to the Cooperative Manager of Environment and Social Responsibility Brennand, Murilo Cesar Laurindo Bento, the project still requires the installation licence and operation sequence, which has no deadline. The current stage of preliminary licence was filed more than a year. "It is in the analysis phase by IAP," he explained. The company began the studies in the area for about three years. The Environmental Impact Report (RIMA) is available on the IAP and COMDEMA received a copy.
The 330h site, which will border with Campo Largo on the river Concepcion, has two mines and will be able to extract 2.5Mta of limestone. The cement plant will occupy an area of 78ha with construction on around 30ha. The works is designed to produce 4000tpd of clinker and 2.2Mta of cement.
The plant is expected to be generated 600 direct jobs and 2000 indirect jobs during the construction period and 100 directly and 400 indirectly in the operation. Two public hearings are scheduled for 23-24 November, one in Campo Largo and one in Cerrado Grande (Itaiacoca).
