McInnis Cement announced it has signed an agreement with Gaspe Railway Corporation (Société du chemin de fer de la Gaspésie - SCFG) for the distribution of cement from New Richmond, Quebec, to various Canadian and US markets. The agreement relates to the transportation of approximately 140,000t of cement over a five-year period.
The cement will be loaded into trucks at the mill site, transported to New Richmond and then transhipped into the cars via a measuring hopper that will be installed by SCFG.
"The use of rail combined with the efficiency of shipping brings McInnis the flexibility and competitiveness necessary for the distribution of cement that will be produced by the company from spring 2017. We are pleased to confirm this contract, It is part of the future of the railway infrastructure, and we plan to increase the volumes transported if conditions permit," said Hervé Mallet, president and CEO of McInnis Cement.
The first railway convoy is expected to leave a few weeks after the cement production in the new installation of Port-Daniel-Gascons.
