President Yoweri Museveni recently directed companies working on projects in Uganda to buy materials locally. Deng Changyi, the acting project manager of Sinohydro Corporation, the company constructing the 600MW Karuma Hydro Power Project, disclosed that efforts have been made to increase the use of local product in the project by buying cement and steel made in Uganda.
Many local suppliers have complained of their products and services not being bought as some companies prefer to buy their products from abroad.
Changyi said they have signed purchase agreements for cement with Kampala Cement, Hima Cement. The project is expected to be commissioned in December next year and will increase electricity supply.
