Vietnam’s Power Generation Corporation 1 (GENCO 1), a unit of the country’s state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN), has signed deals with seven partners to sell some 2.9Mt of fly ash from the Duyen Hai 1 and 3 thermal power plants in the southern province of Tra Vinh.
The fly ash will be used as additives in cement production, reported the Thoi Bao Kinh Doanh newspaper, citing Nguyen Hai Ha, head of technical production at EVN.
To date GENCO 1 has sold 140,000t of fly ash since the Duyen Hai 1 and Duyen Hai 3 thermal power plants were put into operation, equivalent to 7.1 per cent of the plants’ total fly ash output. At present, GENCO 1 is promoting the development of a pipeline for transporting of fly ash by compressed air to port to reduce logistics cost, according to Viet Nam News.
Coal-fired power plants in Vietnam produce around 3Mta of fly ash and cinders and the disposal of these by-products presents a significant challenge for the country.
