The Tamil Nadu government has recently scaled down its procurement for the ‘Amma Cement Supply Scheme’ as a result of poor sales figures, according to The Hindu. The project was set up in 2014 to help low and middle income groups purchase cement at subsidised prices.
However, the highest sales figures, recorded in August 2016, only achieved 53 per cent of the quantity procured. While Tamil Nadu Cement Corp Ltd (Tancem) initially purchased 200,000t of PPC per month to sell for INR190 (US$2.92)/50kg bag, that has now been reduced in line with the average sales of the last four months and the waitlisted quantity.
