Uzbekistan’s Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AGMK) plans to ship several batches of cement to Afghanistan by the end of the year, after signing a number of supply contracts in July. The cement will reportedly be used for the construction of infrastructure and social facilities in the country, according to the company. The deliveries will be made from its Jizzakh and Sherabad plants.
"The interest of Afghan companies in domestic cement is due to several factors. First, Sherabad cement plant is by far the southernmost enterprise in the country producing such products. Therefore, transportation costs and delivery times for cement to Afghanistan are shorter than other manufacturers. Moreover, the industrial facility is located in the centre of the logistics hub, which has a wide range of possibilities for the delivery of goods by any means of transport," said the company in statement.
Over the first half of 2019, the Jizzakh cement plant has exported over 28,000t of product worth more than US$1.6m.
