Fletcher Building’s Golden Bay company is revolutionising the cement industry at its Portland cement plant near Whangarei by replacing up to 60 per cent of coal with old tyres and treated timber, aiming to be coal-free by 2030.

Using 30,000t tyres annually, New Zealand's Whangarei plant has  saved 100,000t of waste from landfills and next, they plan to replace more coal with non-recyclable materials like old carpet and plastic.

“Golden Bay's efforts are setting a benchmark for low-carbon cement production, showing how innovation can drive us toward a greener future,” reported the company.
