Sonapur cement plant provokes violent protests

Taj Cement Authority’s plans to build a new cement plant in Sonapur, Assam, India, was met by violent protests from local residents over concerns regarding the environmental impact of the plant on the local area.

According to Indian Today, activists argue that the INR3420m (US$41m) project will cause irreversible damage to the local ecosystem, impacting not only the biodiversity of the area, which is known for its lush landscapes, and human health.
