Robust cement sales growth for Indonesia in May

Cement sales in Indonesia amounted to 5.678Mt in May. This is an increase of 11.2 per cent YoY compared to the 5.008Mt reported a year earlier.

Regional sales reported growth across all areas led by Kalimantan where the development of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, is ongoing. Sales there rose 32.2 per cent YoY in May to 475,672t up from 359,758t. Local dispatches in Bali-Nustra rose 23.9 per cent YoY to 346,822t from 280,184t. Java, the country’s largest market, saw sales rise 12.4 per cent YoY to 3.018Mt, from 2.686Mt. Sumatra reported growth of 3.5 per cent YoY to 1.140Mt, up from 1.102Mt. Maluku-Papua also saw a rise 3.5 per cent YoY, coming in at 159,703t, up from 154,316t. Sales rose 0.4 per cent YoY to 427,951t from 426,406t in Sulawesi.

Production
Cement production in Indonesia rose 11.6 per cent YoY to 5.493Mt, from 4.92Mt in May 2023. Clinker production increased 9.3 per cent YoY to 4.732Mt, up from 4.331Mt previously.

Exports
In May cement exports shrank a notable 30.8 per cent YoY to 67,201t, down from 97,100t a year earlier. Meanwhile, clinker exports jumped 17.7 per cent YoY to 672,317Mt from 571,064t a year earlier. Bangladesh was the key export market in May, accounting for 66 per cent of total exports, followed by Australia (15 per cent) and Taiwan (11 per cent).
 
January to May 2024
Cement sales in Indonesia in the first five months of 2024 amounted to 23.189Mt. This is an increase of 2.3 per cent YoY compared to the 22.667Mt reported in the same period a year earlier.

Three regions reported increases in sales and three reported contractions during the period. Kalimantan reported a 23.1 per cent YoY increase to 2.004Mt from 1.626Mt. Sales in Bali-Nustra rose 13.7 per cent YoY to 1.49Mt, from 1.31Mt previously, and sales in Java rose 2.2 per cent YoY to 11.969Mt, up from 11.716Mt.

Contrastingly sales in Sulawesi fell 7.6 per cent YoY to 2.036Mt from 2.204Mt, local dispatches in Maluku-Paua declined 6.1 per cent YoY to 786,836t from 837,711t, and Sumatra recorded a 1.3 per cent YoY fall to 4.902Mt from 4.971Mt in the first five months of 2023.
