Algeria’s Chlef cement works in Oued Sly intends to double its production capacity to 4Mta as the country’s Minister of Industry, Cherif Rahmani, launched the project for a new line during a visit to the area. Output from the new unit is earmarked for the domestic market, which currently has a 5Mt supply deficit. Construction of Ain El Kebira second line begins, Algeria

Algeria’s Minister of Industry, SMEs and Investment Promotion, Cherif Rahmani, started off the construction of the second production line at the Ain El Kebira cement plant, north of Setif. The new line, which has a clinker capacity of 6000tpd, is part of GICA’s drive to up state-owned production capacity by 26Mt by the end of 2016. When completed, in 33 months’ time, the extension will take output capacity at the site from 1Mta to 3Mta.

Cement imports into Algeria soared nearly 86 per cent to US$211.59m in the 1H13 when compared with the previous year’s US$113.78m, according to the country’s national statistics office, CNIS. Cement imports into Algeria reached US$159.4m in the first five months of 2013, representing a 102 per cent rise when compared with the equivalent period of 2012, according to the National Information and Statistics Centre of the Algerian Customs. In terms of volumes, a 105 per cent rise was noted with tonnage reaching 1.791Mt. The rise is due to the launch of new projects and the resumption of public construction work since the start of spring.

Cement imports into Algeria have almost doubled in 2012, according to the National Customs Centre for Informatics and Statistics (CNIS). The import value of construction cement, which encompasses five types, rose 94.67 per cent in 2012, from US$125.537m to US$244.4m, according to a CNIS report.
