State officials have approved a request from Lafarge to burn asphalt shingles and plastics at its plant near Alpena, Michigan, USA. The state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has approved the permit saying emissions shouldn't have health effects on residents, Alpena News reported yesterday. Lafarge Canada Inc and Van Houtte Coffee Services Inc are teaming up to replace a portion of Lafarge's fossil fuels energy at the Kamloops, British Columbia (BC) cement plant with used K-Cup® packs. Namibia-based Ohorongo Cement plant plans to use blackthorn as biofuel for cement production, helping the southern Africa country's sole cement producer keep energy costs down. Lafarge Canada seeks approval to burn waste plastic at Brookfield

Lafarge Canada plans to apply to Nova Scotia’s Environment Department for a trial permit to burn waste plastic as an alternative fuel at its Brookfield cement plant.   The plastic would partially replace coal use at the works. The project is expected to create jobs in the local area, related to the preparation and transportation of the potential fuel.   The cement plant will run an open house on 17 July as part of the community consultation process.

Messebo Cement shifts to biomass usage, Ethiopia

Ethiopia-based Messebo Cement is establishing a biomass processing plant to help partly substitute imported coal usage in its manufacturing process, thereby reducing production costs.
