Grupo Argos to invest COP2.6trn in subsidiaries in 2019

Colombia’s Grupo Argos, parent company of Cementos Argos, has stated that it plans to invest around COP2.6trn (US$816m) in its cement, energy and construction subsidiaries this year. Cementos Argos, Celsia and Odinsa will be the focus of the spending, made possible by the increase in net profits for the group in 2018. "In the coming years we'll continue to be a relevant player in the infrastructure of the country and the continent," said Grupo Argos CEO, Jorge Mario Velasquez.

Cementos Argos has released its financial figures and strategic milestones of 2018 during the shareholders' annual meeting. Cementos Argos reported a consolidated EBITDA of COP1.54bn (US$491.7m) and a growth of eight per cent. The company dispatched 16Mt of cement and 10.3Mm 3 of concrete generating income of COP8.4bn. Colombian market sees modest dispatch growth in January

National dispatches in Colombia edged up by one per cent to 918,300t in January 2019 from 909,400t in January 2018, according to the country’s national statistics office, DANE. Ready-mix companies and the retail sector increased their off-take by 3.5 and 1.2 per cent, respectively. Bulk sales slipped 0.4 per cent YoY while bagged cement sales advanced 1.6 per cent. Cementos Argos has posted its full-year 2018 results and reported that cement and ready-mix volumes fell in 4Q18 by three and seven per cent, respectively. The company pointed to unfavourable weather conditions in the USA and higher electricity and fuel costs in Colombia that were only partially offset by stronger sales in the Caribbean. Dispatches in the Colombian cement market advanced 2.6 per cent to 0.973Mt in December 2018 from 0.949Mt in December 2017, according to the country’s national statistics office, DANE. Domestic dispatches of grey cement in Colombia advanced 4.3 per cent YoY to 1.065Mt in November 2017 from 1.021Mt, according to the latest data from DANE, the country’s statistics office. The Colombian cement market expanded by 5.2 per cent to 1.083Mt  in October 2018 when compared with 0.949Mt in October 2017, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Cement dispatches in September 2018 increased by 0.8 per cent YoY to 1.031Mt from 1.023Mt, according to DANE, the country’s statistics office. Demand growth was led by Córdoba, where it rose by 18.3 per cent YoY, followed by Meta (+16.1 per cent) and Nariño (+12.8 per cent).
