Ecuador: Holcim inaugurates modernised Guayaquil works

Holcim recently opened Phase II of its Guayaquil, Ecuador, cement works modernisation. The second phase of the Guayaquil modernisation includes the addition of a new raw vertical mill, clay storage building and raw material storage. During the 28-month construction period, the company strived to maintain high industrial safety, promoting safe work sites through 49,000h of staff training. Ecuador 2014 sales down 2%

Ecuador cement sales dipped in 2014 to 6.47Mt, down two per cent from the 6.60Mt recorded in the previous year, latest data from domestic cement association INECYC shows . Last year's decline follows three consecutive years of annual sales growth in the Latin American country from 2011 to 2013. During December 2014, monthly sales rose 4.85 per cent to 557,786t compared to November 2014 (532,009t).

Cementos Yura, part of Peru’s Grupo Gloria, has acquired a 63.5 per cent share in state-owned Unión Cementera Nacional of Ecuador, which will hold the balance of shares. Ecuador cement sales registered a double-digit monthly decline during November 2014, latest data from Ecuador cement association Inecyc shows.  Sales during November were down by 11.7 per cent to 532,009t compared to 602,748t in the previous month. Total sales for the January-November 2014 period reached 5.913Mt.

US$125m CAF loan signed for Guayaquil project

Holcim Ecuador SA has signed a loan contract for US$125m with the Latin American development bank, CAF. The funds will finance the modernisation of Holcim’s Guayaquil plant. The upgrade programme will see clinker production capacity rise to 3.4Mta, enabling to replace current clinker imports by domestic production and reduce the country’s currency outflow. Peruvian cement producer Union Andina de Cementos SAA (UNACEM) confirmed that it has completed the purchase of Lafarge’s cement operations in Ecuador. "We are pleased with the closing of the transaction, which represents an important step in our growth strategy,” Carlos Ugás, managing director of Unacem. Ecuador cement sales during October 2014 reached 602,748t, up 4.61 per cent compared to the previous month. Accumulated sales over the first 10 months of this year were 5.381Mt, according to the latest data from domestic cement association INECYC.

Unacem plans to invest US$58m in 2015

Peru's Unacem intends to invest US$58m in its Atocongo and Condorcocho works next year. The projects focus on the development of the Carpapata III hydropower plant, the cement mill and packing area (Condorcocha) as well as  capacity expansions and other investments in fixed assets. Lafarge has agreed the sale of Lafarge Cementos in Ecuador to Union Andina de Cemento of Peru for US$553m. The completion date for the sale of this 1.4Mta works has yet to be agreed. This deal follows the sale of the Honduran cement operations to Cementos Argos at around the turn of the year. Lafarge Zimbabwe is looking for a suitable site on which to build a cement works costing US$250m-300m. One limestone deposit has been identified to date and other opportunities are being looked into....
