ACC Ltd (LafargeHolcim group) has adopted the use of solar power in the cement manufacturing process at its grinding units in Kudithini and Thondebhavi in Karnataka. The intent is to use about 30MW of solar power at these plants, which will meet over half its annual power requirement – an estimated 45m units of solar power annually. Switching to solar power will reduce CO 2 emissions by 38,000t every year, the equivalent of planting 45,000 trees yearly. An assessment conducted by the Solar...

TPI Polene claims waste-fuelled power is unsustainable

07 November 2018, Published under Cement News

TPI Polene has complained about the quality of national waste sorting in Thailand. The company has invested about THB4bn (US$121.9m) in waste-fuelled power plants. But high operational costs, including sorting, make the waste-to-energy business unsustainable, says the Thai cement producer.  The lack of sorting means that Thailand's wet and damp waste can only generate about 1200kcal of energy when it is burned in the cement kiln. Japanese cement kilns generate 4000kcal from sorted waste f...

The European Climate Foundation releases CO2 emissions report

01 November 2018, Published under Cement News

There is a significant saving potential of up to 80 per cent of CO 2 emissions in the cement sector by making use of efficiency measures along the whole value chain, without carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. These CO 2 savings could be achieved for a relatively-low financial cost and even with financial savings in some cases. If combining this with CCS, a-close-to carbon-neutral cement and concrete sector is feasible by 2050.   This is the main finding of “ A sustainable futur...
