Cementos Bío-Bío has cut PM emissions at its Talcahuano works by more than 600tpa. The improvement follows the installation of a bag filter, which has been in operations since last year and represents an investment of US$5m.

Holcim opens water treatment plant in Mexico

Holcim has opened a water treatment plant in Mexico at its Ramos Arizpe complex operated by subsidiary Ecoltec. The plant, which will treat water contaminated by hydrocarbons, has a daily capacity of 40m3 and allows the firm to process water more efficiently.

Cementos Cosmos lodges alternative fuels appeal

Cementos Cosmos has lodged an appeal with Andalusia’s Committee of Environment and Spatial Planning as the cement producer was denied an amendment to its Integrated Environmental Authorisation for the Niebla plant. The amendment, if granted, would allow Cementos Cosmos to burn waste-derived fuel, replacing fossil fuels. GCC’s Pueblo plant starts TDF usage

GCC’s Pueblo plant in Colorado has begun utilising tyre-derived fuel (TDF) in its manufacturing process. The plant team is targeting an eventual fuel replacement of 50 per cent of calciner fuel, which equates to 30 per cent of total fuel. The company expects to replace 40,000tpa of coal. GCC plans to further investigate available fuels and raw materials to further its sustainability program, reduce environmental impacts and make its operations more eco-efficient.

Cemento Polpaico plans to invest US$42m in a 20MW solar power project, to be installed next to its plant in Tiltil municipality, Chile. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected, in part, petitions from the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups to vacate the 2013 Portland cement national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAP) rule, the PCA has said.
