GCC signs 15-year solar power deal in Mexico

Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua SAB de CV is to operate some of its cement operations in Mexico on solar energy under a newly-signed power purchase agreement (PPA). The company said it signed a 15-year off-take deal with a Mexican solar power supplier for electricity for its cement factory in Juarez, ready-mix and aggregates operations and corporate offices. Mexico's construction industry contracted 6.6 per cent YoY during the third quarter of 2019, its worst period since the first quarter of 2009, due to lack of public work and fewer Infrastructure. Cemex has reported consolidated net sales of US$3.5bn in the 3Q19, representing a decrease of four per cent YoY, or one per cent on a like-for-like (LfL) basis for the ongoing operations and adjusting for foreign-exchange fluctuations. Mexico's Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) has recorded an 8.3 per cent YoY rise in consolidated net sales to US$301.7m for the third quarter of 2019, on the back of improved cement volumes and prices in Mexico and the USA. Mexico City’s cement prices have fallen in September compared to June 2019, according to a survey conducted by Morgan Stanley Casa de Bolsa. Mexico’s Grupo Cementos Chihuahua (GCC) has signed an agreement with a US-based clean energy provider for the supply of solar and wind energy to its cement plant in Odessa, Texas, to fulfil 100 per cent of the facility’s electricity requirement. CYCNA (Cruz Azul group) commissioned a Loesche cement grinding plant in Tepezalá, Mexico, last year, and this summer two more Loesche coal grinding plants for petcoke grinding will be installed at the Lagunas and Hidalgo cement plants.
