Cement sales in Brazil (excluding imports) increased by 1.2 per cent to 5.56Mt in May 2023, when compared with 5.494Mt in May 2022, according to the Brazilian cement association, SNIC. The northern market saw the biggest increase, by 8.3 per cent YoY, to 234,000t, followed by the south, where the uptick was 3.9 per cent YoY to 975,000t. The Argentine cement market contracted 1.5 per cent YoY to 1,072,110t in May 2023, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. In May 2022 domestic consumption reached 1,088,000t. However, MoM demand was up 4.2 per cent from 1,028,598t in April 2023. Market demand was entirely supplied by domestic production, which contracted two per cent YoY from 1,098,484t to 1,076,287t in May 2023. Grey cement dispatches in Colombia declined 9.3 per cent YoY to 0.987Mt in April 2023 from 1.089Mt in April 2022, according to the country’s statistics agency, DANE. Bulk cement sales were down 5.6 per cent YoY while bagged sales saw an 11.1 per cent drop. Cement dispatches in Peru fell by 17 per cent YoY to 0.883Mt in April 2023, according to the Peruvian cement association, Asocem. Of this total, 0.851Mt was delivered by Asocem members. CEMEX has acquired a mortar plant near Madrid, Spain, as part of its ongoing strategy to increase EBITDA through bolt-on acquisitions. Chile’s cement market contracted by 10.3 per cent YoY to 328,003t in March 2023 from 365,8926t in March 2022, according to the country’s construction chamber, CChC. In the January-March 2023 period sales were down 10.3 per cent to 926,061t from 1,032,001t in the first quarter of 2022.

Votorantim Cimentos has reported global revenue of BRL5.8bn (US$1.17bn) in the first quarter of 2023, up 18 per cent YoY.
