Cement sales down in Canaries

Cement sales on the Canary islands decreased 2.4 per cent in November, when compared with November 2017. Sales reached 52,221t, according to the Canary Statistics Institute. Cement sales fell on the main two islands – by 15.8 per cent to 17,602t on Gran Canaria and by 0.7 per cent to 21,969t on Tenerife. Other islands reported a rise.

Spain sees 9% rise in demand in September

The Cement Demand Index has seen an 8.5 per cent increase YoY in September, but slipped 0.2 per cent MoM, according to data published by Oficemen. In the October 2017-September 2018 period, it is estimated that Spain has consumed 13Mt of cement with growth attributed to the residential sector. Clinker and cement exports continue to fall for the 16th month running. In August they fell by 8.4 per cent YoY.

Spain’s cement producers to be included in power support plan

Spanish cement producers will be included in plans to support the power-intensive industry, which is facing rising electricity bills, according to the country’s Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto.  With this measure, the government plans to avoid new cases such as that of Cemex, which announced the closure of two of its seven cement works in the country. Domestic demand in Spain up 8%

Cement demand in Spain noted an eight per cent YoY growth in June, according to the Spanish cement association, Oficemen. In addition, cement exports have seen an accelerated decline, falling by 10 per cent YoY. For 2018 the association expects consumption to advance by seven per cent YoY, closing the year with a demand of 13.3Mt.

Cemex Spain to close Gádor plant

Cemex Spain has announced the closure of its Gádor cement plant, which has been in operation since 1977. The closure of the cement works, announced via an employment regulation fire (ERE) to the works committees at the plant, will see the employment of 100 permanent and 200 temporary workers. Oficemen downgrades growth forecast

Cement producers have reduced their growth forecast for 2018 from 12 per cent to seven per cent, according to Oficemen, Spain’s cement association. They attribute the lower growth rate to the economic slowdown and “paralysis” that governs the execution of public work. Spain’s Cementos Tudela Veguín has announced plans to construct a terminal at Gijón port, Asturias, for the reception, storage and loading of cement. The terminal is expected to serve the facilities of the company’s subsidiary, Masaveu Industria, and occupy an area of 14,000m 2 . Votorantim España has named Alan Svaiter as its new CEO, replacing Jorge Wagner, who has taken up the post of CEO of Votorantim Cimentos Europe, Asia and Africa. Cemex has filed an appeal for reversal of the Government resolution regarding the cement producer’s exploitation of the Can Negret quarry in Alaró, Spain. Lloseta plant applies for raw material extension

Cemex's Lloseta cement plant in Spain has applied for permission to extract a maximum of 15Mt of raw material from its quarry of Can Negret, Alaró, until 2032. The cement producers has presented the project to the Ministry of Treball in line with the Balearic mining ordinance of 2014. It also has drawn up a plan for the restoration following exploitation.
