Sri Lanka's cement production fell 3.2 per cent to 2.086Mt in the first nine months of 2018, but output picked up in September. Total imports and production was flat at 6.204Mt in the first nine months of the year, against 6.229Mt a year earlier, reports the Central Bank. Leading analysts point to a recovery in Sri Lanka's construction sector following a 56 per cent rise in cement imports during May 2018, while domestic production has also increased. Following the 1Q18 contraction in construction of 4.9 per cent, cement imports surged to 633,000t in May 2018, taking the total imports in the first five months to 2.3Mt, which is up 1.5 per cent from a year earlier. Tokyo Cement Plc reported losses of LKR605m (US$3.78m) in the June 2018 quarter as revenues fell and the sale of a vessel added LKR380m to the losses already sustained. In the June 2018, revenues declined four per cent to LKR7.76bn while costs rose by four per cent to LKR6.2bn. Finance expenses increased 170 per cent to LKR380m. Tokyo Cement suffers LKR285m loss

Sri Lanka's Tokyo Cement Co (Lanka) Plc has reported a LKR285m (US$1.79m) loss in the March 2018 quarter compared with a profit of LKR911m a year ago. Group sales fell two per cent to LKR8.8bn over the period, according to interim accounts filed with the stock exchange. In the year to 31 March 2018, Tokyo Cement made a net profit of LKR2.27bn although sales were down one per cent to LKR36bn.
