Holcim's results boosted by mild winter in Europe

Holcim's first quarter turnover declined by 5.4 per cent to CHF4,088m (€3,342m), but on a like-for-like basis, there was a 7.8 per cent increase while measured in euros the turnover was off by five per cent.  The operating EBITDA declined by 5.1 per cent to CHF617m (€504m), but this represents an underlying increase of 10.1 per cent. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected, in part, petitions from the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups to vacate the 2013 Portland cement national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAP) rule, the PCA has said. CO 2 emissions from US cement plants increased 9.4 per cent to 35.051Mt in 2012 from 32.010Mt the previous year, according to the ‘Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Sinks, 1990-2012, published by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on 15 April 2014. Titan America has begun turning selected wastes into alternative fuel for use at its Pennsuco plant in Medley, Florida. The company works with a unit of Republic Services in Fort Lauderdale that collects refuse from businesses, mostly in Broward County.
