Uganda is at risk of losing a US$250m cement plant investment to Kenya due to challenges associated with land acquisition in the country, according to Hima Cement’s Managing Director, Nicolas George. The Moroto District local government in Uganda has offered more than 228.1ha of land for a cement factory to be built. However, local residents dispute the amount of land that the council owns. Cement prices in Uganda have fallen 25 per cent in the last six months, dropping to UGX28,000/50kg bag (US$7.5/50kg bag) from UGX38,000/50kg bag. The drop in prices follows the recent boost in production capacity in the country, with a number of plant expansions and greenfield projects commissioned within the past year. Uganda's President, Yower Museveni, has opened the Tororo grinding plant of Simba Cement and during the opening the owners of the factory announced that they would produce the lowest-priced cement in the country.
