Navigating EU CBAM

22 October 2024, Published under Cement News

As the European Union (EU) implements its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), non-EU cement producers such as Türkiye will need to address new challenges as they trade cement with EU countries. This article aims to provide an overview of the current status of the EU CBAM, outline key milestones and examine the challenges this policy creates for cement producers outside the EU. New near-zero emissions cement

18 October 2024, Published under Cement News

Researchers from UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) have developed a method to reduce carbon emissions in cement production drastically. Their new ZeroCal process aims to eliminate up to 98 per cent of the carbon emissions generated during cement production. The process not only tackles the emissions caused by the breakdown of limestone but also proposes a clean, energy-efficient way to heat cement kilns. Gaurav Sant, professor of sustainability at UCLA Samueli, said: "The Ze...

C-CRETE Technologies pours world’s first granite-based concrete

14 October 2024, Published under Cement News

C-Crete Technologies (California, USA), a producer of sustainable building materials, has achieved a milestone of creating the world’s first granite-based concrete. This concrete is devoid of Portland cement and any CO 2 emissions, poured first at a building cite in Manhattan. C-Crete’s new granite-based concrete was poured at the site of JPMorganChase’s new global headquarters, designed by Foster & Partners, engineered by Severud Associates Consulting Engineers. Taiheiyo Cement Corporation’s Carbofix blocks adopted for public works

05 September 2024, Published under Cement News

Roadway interlocking concrete blocks and property boundary concrete blocks, both made from Taiheiyo Cement Group ’s CARBOFIX ® cement, have been adopted for a municipal public works project of Fukaya City, Saitama, Japan. This marks the first time that a poured-in concrete product made of CARBOFIX cement has been put in practical use. The CARBOFIX cement has reduced the amount of CO 2 emissions from this project by about 330kg compared to using ordinary cement. The roadway interlock...

UK: Build, Build, Build

06 December 2021, Published under Cement News

Backed by extensive infrastructure investment, the UK construction industry has made an impressive recovery from the pandemic. But all is not plain sailing as labour and material shortages continue to delay projects and raise costs. Moreover, while UK cement producers are enjoying this renewed demand, the pressure is on to meet and even exceed the industry’s net zero carbon targets. A new chloride bypass and preprocessing plant is due for completion at Aggregate Industries’ Cauldon...

CEMBUREAU held its ‘Cementing Europe’s Future: Action Through Policy’ webinar on 12 October 2021. Two panel discussions looked at whether the cement industry was ‘Fit for 55 per cent’ carbon reduction by 2030 alongside considering the carbon neutral built environment and the role of concrete within it. Is Europe’s cement industry Fit for 55 per cent carbon reduction by 2030? Isidoro Miranda, CEO of Holcim Spain and CEMBUREAU president, opened the meeting stating that the “cement...

Europe: invest, divest, assess

27 September 2021, Published under Cement News

ICR looks at how economies have fared across western, central and eastern Europe over 2020-21, and what action Europe’s leading cement producers are taking to not only recover from the pandemic but also prepare for the challenges that still lie ahead as emissions regulations tighten and the need for leaner, greener production ramps up. Investing in low-carbon technology, carbon neutrality and portfolio assessment are the key themes going forward for cement producers in the European...

CO2 to biofuels at Argos

20 September 2021, Published under Cement News

To address the urgency of the climate crisis, a wide range of CCUS technology pathways are being explored by the cement industry. One of these options is the use of microalgae to capture CO 2 and transform it into valuable products. Over the past 10 years, Argos has been researching and scaling up the use of microalgae. Recently, the company has been testing a group of technologies to capture CO 2 directly from the cement plant smokestack using photobioreactors (PBRs) and transform the res...

The potential of activated clays in cement

10 August 2021, Published under Cement News

One of the pathways to a more sustainable cement industry is the reduction of the clinker factor in cement. The use of thermally-activated clays not only reduces the clinker content but also lowers CO 2 emissions as a result of dihydroxilation instead of dicarbonation and other energy savings.
