Cement demand in Indonesia declined 16.3 per cent YoY to 5.3Mt in July 2020, according to the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). The market of Sulawesi saw the largest contraction at 26.1 per cent to 413,000t. However, the drop in consumption in the key markets of Sumatra and Java had a greater impact. Cement demand in Puerto Rico advanced 23.8 per cent YoY to 60,546t (1.42m bags of 42.6kg) when compared with 49,033t (1.15m bags) in July 2019, according to data by the country’s statistics institute. Cement dispatches in Chile fell 15.4 per cent YoY in May 2020 to 291,781t from 345,001t in May 2019, according to the Chilean Chamber of Construction (CChC). In June the market continued to contract, with sales down 26.9 per cent YoY to 213,502t from 291,979t in June 2019. In the first six months of 2020 demand in the South American country declined 13.7 per cent YoY to 1,781,388t from 2,065,205t in the 6M19.

Cement sales in Vietnam fell eight per cent YoY but edged up by two per cent to 5.335Mt in July 2020, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Cement dispatches in Peru are recovering from COVID-19 disruption. In July 2020, 0.826Mt of cement was delivered to the domestic market, according to Asocem. While still 5.7 per cent below the July 2019 level of 0.876Mt, when compared with June 2020, there was a 39 per cent surge from 0.594Mt. Cement sales in the Dominican Republic fell 20.3 per cent YoY to 1,835,598t in the first half of 2020 from 2,303,915t in the 1H19, reports the domestic cement association, Adocem. Cement sales in Vietnam fell by eight per cent in June 2020 when compared to June 2019, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Shipments reached 5,215,388t, noting a similar MoM decrease from 5,680,883t in May 2020. In July 2020 Argentina’s cement market contracted by 13.5 per cent YoY to 865,869t but expanded by 8.5 per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. The market was entirely supplied by domestic production with no imports reported. Cement deliveries in Morocco fell 24.1 per cent YoY to 1,073,755t in July 2020 from 1,415,075t in July 2019, reports the Ministry of Urbanisation and Housing. In the January-July 2020 period, deliveries declined 19.5 per cent YoY to 6,547,485t when compared with 8,132,157t in the 7M19.
