French cement market expands despite housing start drop

Cement import into USA draws US$506,250 OFAC penalty

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has reached a US$506,250 settlement with ZAG International, based in Newtown (CT), for illegally sourcing clinker from Iran. Between 11 July 2014-15 January 2015, ZAG International purchased 263,563t of Iranian-origin clinker via a supplier in the UAE, which was then resold by the company to a customer in Tanzania. Armenia’s government is taking measures to protect domestic cement producers from competition by cement producers in neighbouring countries. The state policy of subsidising the cost of gas and electricity in Armenia’s neighbours has led to a rise in more competitively-priced imports into Armenia. Cement demand in Peru increased to 1.022Mt in January 2019, according to the latest figures by the country’s cement association, Asocem. This represents a YoY rise of 9.8 per cent from 0.931Mt reported in January 2018. Cement demand in Argentina fell 16.3 per cent to 873,958t in January 2018, when compared with 1,043,732t in January 2017, according to the latest data from the Argentinian cement association, AFCP. This demand was supplied entirely by domestic producers and no imports were reported. Domestic cement sales in Brazil totalled 4.5Mt in January 2019, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). When compared with January 2018, the latest data reflect an advance of 4.2 per cent. In terms of days worked, domestic sales advanced 2.5 per cent MoM. Tasman Sea to complete clinker offloading at Suva

Bulk carrier Tasman Sea is expected to complete the offloading of 11,880t of clinker at Suva Port, Fiji, today, according to the Fiji Sun. The clinker has been exported from Japan, which became a clinker importer into Fiji a year ago. The ship finished discharging 15,000t of clinker for the Tengy Cement Factory in Lautoka last week. The plant receives a clinker shipment every quarter.

US cement market expands 5% in October

Total Portland and blended cement deliveries in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced by 5.2 per cent YoY to 9.9Mt in October 2018, according to data by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Kazakhstan became a net exporter of cement in 2018. During 9M18, domestic cement producers exported more than 1.4Mt of cement with a total value of US$71.5m, almost doubling the export volume of 2017. Safeguard measures placed against imports into Philippines

The Philippine’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has begun preliminary safeguard measures against cement imports from Vietnam amongst other countries. As such, the DTI applied duties of PHP8.40 (US$0.16)/40kg bag or PHP210/t (US$4/t). The safeguard measures will be in place for 200 days from 18 January 2019.
