Holcim announces proposed rights issue

Holcim has announced it will propose shareholders at the next AGM on May 12 a SFr1.7bn capital hike in order to support its growth strategy. The shares will be offered to existing shareholders, with eleven shares entitling to one new registered share, and will be underwritten by a banking syndicate led by UBS AG.  The provisonal issue price set by Holcim and the banking syndicate is SFr83 per new share. China’s output of cement in February 2006

China produced 57,486,300t of cement (all grades) in February 2006. The output in January-February reached 122,384,100t, up 21.3 per cent year on year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.  Looking back, China produced 813.19Mt in 2003; some 933.69Mt in 2004 and  1.0383bn.t in 2005 with approximately 300Mt of comparable international high grade standard.

Votorantim expanding production base

Votorantim Cimentos, with a 40 per cent hold in the Brazilian cement market, is investing US$100m to expand its Sergipe-based plant which might be used to increase export sales into the US. Cemex 1Q hits revenue targets

Cemex registered a 14 per cent gain in first-quarter net profit as the company met its sales goals noting that net profit rose to US$505m from US$444m in the year-earlier period. Consolidated sales jumped 52 per cent to US$3.9bn and the company reported a 29 per cent increase in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Akmenes cement sales soar

Akmenes Cementas, Lithuania’s only cement manufacturer, posted 19.1 million litas (Euro 5.5m) in sales for the first three months of 2006, a surge of 77 per cent from the year-earlier figure of 10.8 million litas.   In March alone, the sales soared 2.1 times, to 6.4 million litas, from 3.1 million litas in March 2005.   "The almost twofold surge in sales resulted on stronger sales on domestic market. Oyak to sell Elazig works

Celalettin Caglar, head of Oyak cement group, said that the group decided to sell its Elazig cement plant. According to Caglar, the company has informed 25 domestic and international investors regarding the sale. In the cement plan, Oyak group holds a 70 per cent stake and Gama owns the remaining 30 per cent. Caglar further noted that they expect the sale process to be completed in June. Carib Cement to assess claims

Carib Cement Co. has dispatched eight inspection teams across the region to assess claims that the company’s production of inferior cement hurt building projects, a company official said Wednesday. Spokeswoman Lystra Sharp said Carib Cement expects to resolve most of the roughly 215 claims by the end of April. A cement factory with an annual production capacity of 1.2Mt will be built in Sumbe, in Kwanza-Sul province, Angola will be financed by Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung, the manager responsible for the project, Marco Sassa told Angola news agency Angpop.
