ICRA expects Indian demand growth to slow

Indian ratings agency ICRA is expecting cement demand growth in the country to taper to about seven per cent in the FY19-20, down from 13 per cent in the previous fiscal. Demand for coal from India's cement sector rises in FY18-19

India’s coal demand increased 9.1 per cent YoY to 991.35Mta during the fiscal year ended March 2019, according to the country’s Coal Minister, Pralhad Joshi. However, India’s supply shortfall more than doubled to 23.35Mt. This has been attributed to Coal India’s inability to meet demand from the cement and sponge iron industries. Tajikistan's cement exports rise in 5M19

Tajikistan has exported nearly 620,000t of cement over the first five months of 2019, with average monthly exports at around 124,000t. The total is over 100,000t more than in Jan-May 2018, according to Asia-Plus. In the 5M19 the country exported 346,000t of cement to Uzbekistan, 247,000t to Afghanistan and 27,000t to Kyrgyzstan, according to the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MoINT).

Ukrainian cement output up 27% in May

Cement production in Ukraine in May 2019 increased by 27.1 per cent YoY to 747,000t, according to the Ukrainian State Statistics Service. When compared with the previous month, cement output fell eight per cent. In the first five months of 2019, total cement production in the country advanced by 3.4 per cent to 3,086,000t when compared with the 5M18. In 2018 cement output declined by one per cent to 8.926Mt when compared with 2017.

Egyptian cement sales decline 8% in 1Q19

Total cement sales in Egypt declined 7.7 per cent QoQ to 10.9Mt during the first quarter of 2019, while production decreased 8.1 per cent QoQ to 11.2Mt, according to the Central Bank of Egypt. The average price of cement slipped 0.8 per cent to EGP1190/t (US$71.2/t) in the 1Q19.

FDI in Pakistan's cement and construction industries continues to slide

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has reported a massive decline of net foreign investment for local industries, including cement and construction, between July 2018-May 2019. According to a central bank report, total foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country fell by 49.2 per cent YoY during the first 11 months of FY18-19. The Cement Demand Index, presented by Oficemen, the Spanish cement producers’ association, has registered an increase of 7.1 per cent in April when compared with April 2018. This represents a fall of nearly two percentage points when compared with March 2018, according to the association.
