Chile – Cementos Melon has 30 days to appeal petcoke decision

Chilean cement manufacturer Cementos Melon, owned by Lafarge, has been given 30 days to file an appeal with the ministerial council of the national environment agency Conama in the hope it will overturn the decision taken by the regional environmental authority Corema of Region V. Earlier this month, Corema rejected a proposal by the cement company to use petcoke at is La Calera works.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is looking into a plan to recycle the residue of semiconductor production at IBM Corporation’s East Fishkill plant into cement. The UK currently has the disposal problem of two million tonnes of sewage sludge per year, much of which is used as agricultural fertiliser. Lafarge Cement is to increase its tyre burning at its Cauldon plant by over 50 per cent to a maximum of 900 tyres per hour after it has been granted permission. Works manager Ian Mycock commented: “ We have used chipped used tyres here as a fuel for over 10 years. In that time we have used over 23 million tyres.
