EU antitrust regulators will assess a bid by Cemex to acquire Holcim's cement operations in Spain following a request from Spanish authorities, the European Commission said. UltraTech Cement, India’s largest cement maker, posted a 52 per cent decline in net profit for the July-September quarter, mainly due to lower selling prices and subdued demand. Cemex third quarter loss expected to narrow

Cemex is expected to post a narrower third quarter loss for the July-September period of 2013 led by a pick-up by US sales, the company’s biggest market. According to a Reuters' survey of six analysts, the Mexican cement major is expected to report a loss of US$22m compared with a loss of US$203m a year earlier. NORM LLC has launched production at its 2Mta Qizildas Cement plant, marking the entry of a new player on the Azerbaijan market. “At present, construction work is completed at the plant and production of the first cement started. Hetuda Cement Factory has resumed clinker production following a three week closure due to a technical issue with its kiln. Argentina: cement market expands 17% YoY

In September, Argentina’s cement producers delivered 1,050,170t of cement, including exports. While this represents a 2.7 per cent decrease when compared with August dispatches, the volume rose 15.8 per cent YoY. The internal market absorbed 1,041,084t, 2.8 per cent less than the previous month. However, when compared with September 2012, Argentine producers enjoyed a 17 per cent rise in sales.

Ecuador Jan-Sept cement sales rise 11% YoY

Cement sales in Ecuador for the first nine months of 2013 have increased by 11 per cent YoY, latest data from the country’s cement association, Inecyc, shows. During the January-September period the company sold 4.836Mt compared to 4.356Mt in the first nine months of 2012. In September 2013 alone, cement sales were 565,775t, a rise of 8.8 per cent from the 519,919t recorded in the same month of last year.

Vietnam expects price stability

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance's Pricing Management Department expects cement prices to remain stable this month following September’s increase, local press reported. Some companies operating under the country’s largest cement producer, Vicem, raised prices by 5-9 per cent a month ago to VND1.3m-1.5m/t (US$61-71) in the north and VND1.6m-VND1.8m in the south.
