Indian cement maker Gujarat Ambuja is seeking 200,000t of South African coal for late 4Q shipment, Indian traders said. Indian cement makers such as Ultratech and Gujarat Ambuja have issued frequent and regular buying tenders this year for South African coal. Cement demand in India has been stable despite a fall in the pace of construction from last year’s levels. South Africa has been the cheapest coal origin for Indian buyers for the past several months.

Competition authorities in Pakistan have slapped a fine of about US$7m on 20 cement companies found guilty of operating as a cartel and raising prices under mutual agreement, official documents show. Jamaica will retain the duty waiver for importers of cement but has reserved a larger portion of the market for the Rockfort-based monopoly producer. There has been a 13 per cent reduction in the price of cement in Asaba, according to a market survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The price dropped from N1900 (US$12.24) for a bag in July to N1,650  (US$10.63) in August. Some of the cement dealers attributed the price reduction to the rainy season.
