Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico in December were 6.04Mt, representing a 8.6 per cent YoY fall, according to the US Geological Survey. LafargeHolcim interested in supply US-Mexican border wall

LafargeHolcim has expressed an interest in supplying construction materials to the US-Mexican border wall to be built under the Trump administration. The wall is one of the most controversial electoral promises of the new US president, Donald Trump. The invitation to tender requires interested parties to submit a prototype by 10 March. The US government plans to award prototypes as early as mid-April.

According to several local news sources, approximately 100 firefighters worked to extinguish a conveyor belt fire at LafargeHolcim’s cement plant in Hagerstown, USA. The Slag Cement Association (SCA) announced that in 2016 slag cement shipments showed a YoY increase of 12 per cent. Portland and blended cement shipments in the USA fell 8.4 per cent to 6.039Mt in December 2016 from 6.59Mt in December 2015, according to preliminary data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). USA: Cupertino plant under pressure to reduce noise

The Lehigh Southwest Cupertino cement plant was noise tested for 25 days in October and only recorded one day with higher readings than expected. Vulcan Materials' turnover increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 to US$3592.7m and EBITDA rose by 17.3 per cent to US$965.5m. After a net interest charge 39.5 per cent lower at US$133.3m, there was pretax profit of US$547.3m, a 66.9 per cent improvement. At the net level there was an 89.7 per cent advance to US$419.5m.
