A 60m empty cement barge ran aground near McMicking Point, Vancouver on New Year’s Day. Staff from Vancouver-based Lafarge, the company that owns the barge is however keeping quiet on how the barge ran aground but high winds that day could have been a factor. Previous reports note the barge was under tow by a single tug. No one was aboard the barge, which appears to be empty, but listing slightly in the shallow waters between Trial Island and McNeill Bay. Transport Canada officials say the barge is not a pollution or navigational hazard.
