HeidelbergCement aims to firmly establish itself as the leading cement producer in the Ukraine by agreeing to acquire Dontsement from a group of, mainly US, investors, subject to approval by the local competition authorities. Originally a six  kiln wet process plant, the Dontsement works is located at Amvrosijevka in the eastern part of the Ukraine .  The plant had been idle for a number of years and was restarted only in 2003, following the injection of fresh capital, and now has an effective capacity of 1.6Mt.  The plant primarily supplies the Donetsk area and is also well placed to export cement to Russia and its product range includes slag cement.  The Dontsement works is to the east of HeidelbergCement’s two existing dry process cement plants, at Kryvyi Rih and Dinprodserschynsk, which are both in the Dnepropetrovsk region.  These have a combined capacity of 2.15Mt and sold 1.75Mt of cement in 2004, or around one-fifth of domestic consumption, and reported good volume increases in the first nine months of 2005 in spite of increased import pressure from Russia in the period.
