Ghana has taken a major step towards cement self-sufficiency with the commissioning of a US$100m facility in the port city of Tema, described as the world’s largest limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) plant.

Supacem Cement, the company behind the project, says the facility will use locally-sourced raw materials to replace a portion of imported clinker in cement manufacturing, enabling Ghana, Africa’s largest clinker importer, more capable of weathering international supply disruption.

Last week it was reported that Ghana is currently experiencing a significant shortage of cement, with many construction projects and retailers in limbo.

The Supacem facility is expected to significantly reduce this vulnerability by producing a reactive cementitious material from local limestone and clay. LC3 technology has the potential to cut clinker use by up to 50 per cent, offering both economic and environmental benefits.
