The building of the Kampung Kawayoi Pinangah cement plant in Malaysia’s remote Tongod district on Sabah is now under scrutiny following claims that the investor pulled out.

Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (Ummo-Lamag) called upon the Sabah government to explain this turn of events. “I was informed the company involved has pulled out, and the project is in limbo. The site is in the middle of nowhere - how can this be a serious plan?” he said during the state assembly sitting on 14 April. He questioned the rationale behind the decision to locate the plant in a forested area with no basic infrastructure, particularly as factories in well-developed areas such as Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park are facing challenging business conditions. Furthermore, he highlighted that Sabah lacks the electricity generation capacity to support energy-intensive industries such as cement.
