Local cement manufacturers called on counterparts in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Federation of Cement Manufacturers to resist moves in the World Trade Organization (WTO) to peg a ceiling for tariffs on cement. Ernesto Ordonez, president of the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines, said developed economies want to impose a ceiling that is double of prevailing tariffs, ie, 10 per cent to the Philippines’ current 5 per cent tariff rate. This, in turn, will curtail developing economies’ flexibility when faced with a flood of cheap imports.
