A project to build a cement factory with the capacity to produce 2500tpd is nearing completion.   Work on the factory, located at Ban Nalaokham in the Mahasay district of Khammouane province, Laos, commenced in December 2004 and contractors expect to have completed the project later this year.  It is expected that the factory will be ready to be officially opened and commence work by November this year.

Mr Khamphone Phimasone, the project’s national coordinator said, in a recent interview with KPL News, that the cement factory in Khammouane is one of biggest projects that the Party and Government have embarked on in the province.   “The project is a joint venture between the Laos Government and foreign and domestic businessmen,” he said.

The US$49m project is comprised of four main shareholders. The Vientiane Commercial Bank has a 50 percent share; Kolao has a 20 percent share; the Laos Government has a 15 per cent share; and a consortium of businesses from the private sector also have a 15per cent share.   According to the plan, the factory will produce 2500t of cement per day or 840,000t a year all from local mined sources.
