Yemen is to increase its cement production to 6Mt by 2007, Minister of Industry and Trade Khaled Rajah Sheikh stated. In his remarks to the press, the minister added that the ministry is currently adopting a plan to move up production of cement to four times the current level in cooperation with concerned authorities. Current cement production covers only 45 per cent of the needs of the local markets, he said.
The Military Economic Corporation is working with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to import cement to meet the needs of the local markets.
The measure intends to counteract black markets that are creating the shortage by increasing prices in the face of the demand. In addition to imported cement, the corporation will extend production lines of its Amran, Bajal and Al-Barah plants to 5Mta by 2007.
