Work started on Sunday on the construction of a French-invested cement production plant in southern Dong Nai province by the Lafarge Construction Material Production Group. The grinding plant will be built at a total cost of US$30m, of which Lafarge Group contributed 70 per cent. As scheduled, the plant will start operation in late 2005, turning out 2Mt cement per year.

Lafarge has been in Vietnam since 2001 with its ready-made cement concrete. Addressing a press briefing in Hanoi on Monday, Lafarge Group President Bertrand Collomb pledged to continue investing in the construction material production sector in Vietnam with advanced and environmentally friendly technology.

The group has decided to join the Dona Joint Venture to invest in a project to build the cement production plant in the province.
