Indonesian cement consumption advanced six per cent YoY in April to 5.337Mt, according to the Indonesia Cement Association.
Growth was particularly strong in Sumatra, where demand increased by 12.2 per cent. On Kalimantan deliveries rose by 7.5 per cent to 340,520t while Maluku and Irian Jaya saw demand pick up by 6.2 per cent to 103,479t. In Nusa Tenggara consumption edged up by 2.5 per cent to 284,996t while in Sulawesi it remained stable at 428,691t.
On Java, where consumption rose by 4.9 per cent to 3.027Mt, market expansion proved especially robust in Banten (+12.3 per cent to 281,006t) and Central Java (+11.9 per cent to 754,882t). Yogyakarta and East Java both reported demand declining by 1.3 and 3.6 per cent, respectively.
In the first four months of 2018 total Indonesia cement consumption increased by 6.4 per cent YoY to 21.059Mt from 19.788Mt.
In the country’s largest market, Java, demand rose 5.8 per cent to 11.814Mt from 11.165Mt in 4M17 with market expansion strongest in Central Java (+13.4 per cent) and West Java (+9.1 per cent). Sumatran demand increased by 11.8 per cent YoY to 4.587Mt while in Kalimantan, the rise was 10.5 per cent to 1.369Mt. Sulawesi consumption advanced 4.5 per cent YoY to 1.7Mt. In Maluku and Irian Jaya 1.6 per cent more cement was sold than the year-ago period with sales rising to 0.511Mt. Nusa Tenggara was the only market that saw a YoY contraction, by 6.4 per cent to 1.078Mt.
