Orcem Americas’ plan for a new EUR45m cement mill in Vallejo, California, USA, is likely to face a public hearing from local councillors on 30 May. The Ecocem subsidiary and its project partner, Vallejo Marine Terminal (VMT), are looking to appeal a decision by the city’s planning commission that rejected the proposal in May 2017, according to the Irish Times.
The council will also consider a final environmental report on the project. Last time, following a recommendation by the Vallejo City Hall, the proposal was rejected due to fears that the mill would have a negative effect on nearby neighbourhoods and increase traffic. However, it is not yet known whether Vallejo City Hall will recommend councillors to deny this latest appeal.
The scheduling of the new hearing indicates that an earlier threat to declare the project abandoned, as VMT had reportedly not provided information sought by the city, has been lifted. VMT plans to construct a marine terminal where ships delivering slag from Asia can offload material.
