Italian cement output dropped four per cent YoY in October, according to the latest data from Italian concrete association, Federbeton. This follows a six per cent YoY contraction in September.

Import and export data, which lag production data, show cement imports continued to grow but at a reduced pace in September, rising 13 per cent YoY to 183,454t, with a total CIF value of EUR15.6m or EUR85/t as value per tonne. Meanwhile, cement exports slipped one per cent YoY to 120,002t in August, with a total FOB value of EUR12.4m or EUR103/t.

January-October 2024
Cement output was flat in the first 10M24. This follows a four per cent YoY contraction recorded in the same period of 2023. Italian construction production shrank two per cent YoY in the 10M24, according to Federbeton. After a relatively strong start to 2024, construction and cement demand has tapered off amid the abolition of tax incentives for housing renovation and weak economic growth. 

External trade in 9M24
In the January-September 2024 period cement imports reached 1.681Mt, up 24.9 per cent from the equivalent period of the previous year, when imports reached 1.346Mt. 

In the 9M24 period, cement exports shrank by 5.2 per cent YoY to 1.143Mt from 1.205Mt in the 9M23.
