The Materials Processing Institute (MPI) has announced the launch of its GBP1m Sustainable Cement and Concrete Centre (SCCC), designed to support the construction sector’s decarbonisation efforts. The centre, set to open later this month, will specialise in advanced research and material innovation, including the development of low-carbon cement formulations and the utilisation of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slags in aggregate and clinker production.
Supported by MPI’s Advanced Materials Characterisation Centre, the SCCC will also offer consultancy services to accelerate client innovation, providing expertise and project management from concept through to pilot production stages.
Ahead of the official launch, MPI hosted a meeting of the Cement Standards and Technical Group from the Mineral Products Association (MPA), giving delegates an exclusive preview of the facility’s capabilities.
Terry Walsh, CEO of MPI, remarked: “The SCCC is a critical step in supporting the UK construction industry’s journey to net zero. Cement and concrete are the backbone of our built environment, and by focusing on decarbonising, we can significantly reduce emissions across the sector. This facility demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, providing the tools, expertise and innovation required to enable a greener future.”
Roger Griffiths, manager of innovation projects at the MPA, added: “MPI’s investment in this facility will help support cement and concrete research and testing to strengthen the UK’s position as a leader in sustainable construction innovation.”
Concrete and cement are essential to the UK economy, with over 90Mt used annually. The industry contributes £18bn to GDP and supports 3.5m jobs, playing a crucial role in infrastructure and housing. The decarbonisation of this vital material presents a significant opportunity to enhance sustainability and resilience in the construction sector.
The SCCC forms part of the wider EconoMISER programme, led by the Foundation Industries Sustainability Consortium (FISC), which aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of the UK’s foundation industries. This initiative builds on MPI’s national leadership in research and innovation, as well as its track record of delivering transformative change across the sector.
