Cemex Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and community development through its ongoing collaboration with VeryNile, an initiative endorsed by the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment. The partnership, which began in 2022, aims to reduce pollution in the River Nile and create new opportunities for local communities.
By late 2024, Cemex had collected over 575t of waste from the Nile, with more than 460t repurposed as alternative fuel for its Assiut cement plant, supporting the company’s circular economy strategy. The partnership also involves employee-led volunteer efforts to clean up the river.
The collaboration has facilitated the expansion of VeryNile’s operations, including the launch of its Assiut Hub in Cemex Egypt’s hometown. This initiative has created over 360 jobs, particularly for local fishing communities, enhancing the capacity for waste collection from the river.
In addition to environmental efforts, the partnership is fostering social and educational initiatives. In 2023, Cemex’s Assiut Cement Football Club established a new academy branch on Cairo’s Qursaya Island, providing young people with access to advanced sports facilities, professional training programmes and experienced coaches.
As a result of these initiatives, Cemex was ranked 24th on Fortune's 2024 Change the World list, marking the fourth time the company has been recognised for its positive social impact through local partnerships.
Yago Castro Izaguirre, president of Cemex Egypt and UAE, stated: “Supporting initiatives that can leave a lasting positive impact on the environment and our communities is at the forefront of Cemex’s mission to build a better future for all. With VeryNile, we are alleviating pollution issues within the Nile River through waste-management solutions and developing programmes that can enable people of all ages to grow, prosper, and succeed. Together, we continue to enhance and empower communities across Egypt.”
