Swedish companies Cemvision and construction materials supplier S:t Eriks have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the supply of green cement for next-generation water and sewage infrastructure solutions.
The new collaboration builds upon several successful pilot projects using Cemvision’s climate-smart cement in S:t Eriks’ production and is now ready be scaled up for commercial application.
Cemvision’s green cement, which uses recycled industrial by-products from sectors such as mining and steel instead of limestone, is reckoned to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95 per cent compared to traditional Portland cement. It has also demonstrated high durability in sewage environments and good resistance to sulphate and acid attacks.
According to Oscar Hållén, CEO of Cemvision, the partnership is an important step toward scaling the use of climate-smart cement. He adds: “We’re thrilled to have S:t Eriks join us on this journey. The cement applications they work with are both essential to society and in need of new, smarter solutions.”
Sweden is currently facing significant challenges with its water and sewage infrastructure, with more than 75 per cent of municipalities reporting a high or very high need for reinvestment in their water and wastewater facilities. In addition to its use in reservoirs and purification basins, around a quarter of pipelines, spanning more than 101,000km, use concrete pipes.
