Cementos Molins plans US$189mn investment in Argentina

Cementos Molins SA, Spain, the main stakeholder in Argentina's Cementos Avellaneda, said on Monday it plans to invest US$189mn to expand production at the company's local facilities. Argentina monthly demand down 7.5 per cent YoY

Argentina’s cement demand fell 7.5 per cent YoY and eight per cent MoM to 858,453t in January 2016, according to figures published by AFCP, the country’s cement association. Exports plunged by nearly 74 per cent YoY from 16,589t in January 2015 to 4334t, the data also showed.

Cement prices have jumped between 70-90 per cent in 2015. At the start of the year, a 50kg bag would retail at ARP75-80 (US$5.8-6) while by the end of 2015, the price had risen to ARP125-145 (US$9.6-11), according to local press reports. Argentina dispatches down 12.1% MoM

In November 2015, cement producers in Argentina dispatched 996,925t of Portland cement, including exports, down 12.1 per cent from the previous month, according to the latest data from domestic association AFCP.  Compared to November 2014, the decline was limited to just 1.3 per cent. Domestic shipments were down by 12.7 per cent MoM during November 2015 to 995,497 tons, while YoY the fall was 0.1 per cent.

Argentina’s monthly cement consumption 2.5% ahead

The Argentina cement market saw increased sales in October 2015, up 2.5 per cent YoY from 1,100,852t to 1,127,869t, according to AFCP, the country's cement association. Export sales, however, fell by 56 per cent from 14,344t to 6342t over the same period. In the year to date, dispatches rose 8.4 per cent to 10,175,570t from 9,383,267t posted in January-October 2014. Exports experienced a 42 per cent fall from 137,249t to 79,602t.

Total cement sales increased 14.9 per cent MoM and seven per cent YoY to 1.128Mt in September, according to AFCP, the Argentine cement producers’ association. Cement suppliers in Mendoza province in Argentina have started importing cement from Chile due to a continued and deepening cement supply crisis in recent months. In August 2015 Argentina’s cement producers dispatched 981,621t of cement (including exports), down 8.6 per cent MoM and 2.2 per cent YoY, according to the country's cement association, AFCP. The Argentinean cement market expanded by 1.3 per cent MoM and 12.6 per cent YoY in July 2015, according to domestic cement producers’ association, AFCP.
