Cement production in Kenya rose by 15.2 per cent as consumption in the east African country surges, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. Kenya’s National Cement, part of the Devki Group, plans to build a KES1.7bn (US$19m) coal-fired power plant to serve its clinker plant and limestone mining operation in Kajiado, Kenya. East African Portland Cement posted a net loss of KES386m (US$4.32m) for the year ended June 30, due to price competition, high staff costs and the weakening shilling. The Kenyan cement producer posted a net profit of KES1.7bn a year earlier. Savannah lines up new capacity investments

Bamburi Cement posted a 28 per cent drop in first-half pretax profit to KES2.3bn (US$26.2m) from KES3.2bn a year earlier.
