UNACEM acquires Cementos La Union's operations in Chile

Spain-based Cementos La Unión has closed a deal to sell its operations in Chile to UNACEM, following approval from the National Economic Prosecutor of Chile (FNE) last March. The transaction is valued at US$23m, which includes both the value of the purchase and the existing debt of the subsidiary.  The acquisition will see the transfer of a 300,000tpa grinding and packing plant located in San Antonio, Valparaíso region, as well as two concrete plants.

Belterra clay could replace limestone in cement production

In a study, funded partly by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Germany, and Brazil’s University of Pará, have found that CO2 emissions can be reduced during cement production by up to two-thirds by adding Belterra clay, unused overburden from bauxite mining. Colombian cement dispatches picked up 4.3 per cent to 1.098Mt in August 2021 from 1.052Mt in August 2020, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Cement dispatches by Chilean cement producers improved 21.1 per cent to 371,947t in August 2021 from 307,117t in August 2020, according to the Chilean construction chamber, CChC. In the January-August 2021 period, deliveries advanced 24 per cent to 2,879,749t from 2,321,691t in the 8M20.

Argentinian cement demand increased seven per cent YoY to 1,110,527t in September 2021 from 1,037,475t in September 2021, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Cement demand in Bolivia advanced 40.6 per cent to 325,789t in July 2021 from 231,662t in July 2020 but remained 9.3 per cent below its 2019 level of 359,307t, according to national statistics office, INE. Cement dispatches in Peru advanced 18 per cent to 1.202Mt in August 2021 when compared with 1.018Mt in August 2020, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. Cement producers in Uruguay increased their total deliveries by 8.3 per cent YoY to 60,950t in June 2021 from 55,930t in June 2020, according to the Asociación de Fabricantes de Cemento Portland del Uruguay (AFCPU).
