Southern Cement ships 3Mt of cement through Ipswich

Southern Cement has reached the 3Mt milestone as general cargo vessel MV Arklow Raider arrived from Bilbao into the port of Ipswich, UK, with 4600t of cement. Cement consumption in Spanish has declined by 9.7 per cent to 13.288Mt in 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. The drop was already apparent in January and February, but with the lockdown due the the COVID-19 pandemic, demand in March, April and May fell by more than 1.2Mta when compared with 2019. Cemex is supplying cement and concrete for the Teruel Airport Platform, the largest maintenance, repair and operations airport in Europe. Cemex has supplied 30,000t of cement required to produce 100,000Mm 3 of concrete to build two new hangars, the expansion of the parking arae, a runway of around 3km and industrial zone, terminals, amongst other facilities for the Spanish airport.

Cement consumption in Spain has increased by 3.8 per cent YoY to 1,204,590t in November, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. Exports edged up 1.6 per cent YoY in November. The Spanish cement industry has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 43 per cent throughout its entire value chain by 2030 when compared with the 1990 baseline, according the sector’s “Roadmap of the Spanish cement industry to achieve climate neutrality in 2050”. Cementos Cosmos, part of Votorantim Cimentos, plans to install a 6.2MW photovoltaic facility at its plant in Toral de Vados, Spain. LafargeHolcim will begin to build the first carbon capture facility at its Carboneras plant in Almería, Spain, at the end of the year.
