Maruxa Suarez has been appointed as the new plant director of Lafarge’s Villaluenga de la Sagra works in Toledo, Spain. She replaces Mariano Garcia Hoyos, who was appointed industrial director of Lafarge Malaysia. Matteo Rozzanigo has been appointed as CEO of FYM, Italcementi’s Spanish subsidiary. He is tasked with positioning the company in a cement market, which is expected to stabilise and recover slowly after a prolonged crisis period. Spain: September demand up 6.1%

In September, Spain’s cement consumption rose 6.1 per cent YoY to 959,150t, according to the latest figures issued by Oficemen, the country’s cement association. Cemex reaches agreement regarding Alcanar, Spain

Cemex has reached an agreement with the Santi Vila authorities to keep running its Alcanar works in Tarragona, Spain. In return the Generalitat commits to dredge the port of Barcelona so large vessels can moor and as such, enable Cemex to export to new markets such as the US. Spanish watchdog initiates preliminary inspection

The Spanish competition watchdog Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y de la Competencia (CNMC) has carried out inspections at the headquarters of companies that produce cement, concrete and their derivatives. The preliminary inspections were carried out over 16-18 September 2014 for alleged anti-competitive practices. Should suspicions be confirmed, the regulator will open disciplinary proceedings, which could result in fines amounting to 10 per cent of the companies' turnover.

Spain’s cement consumption fell by a further three per cent in August 2014 to 819,249t. Spanish builder Fomento de Construcciones & Contratas SA (FCC) is to help its cement unit Cementos Portland Valderrivas make a debt payment by transferring rescue funds, according to reports by Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the matter.
